California Proposition 64
California Proposition 64, passed in November 2016, legalized the recreational use of marijuana for adults aged 21 and older. It allows individuals to possess up to one ounce of cannabis and cultivate up to six plants for personal use. The measure also established a regulatory framework for the commercial sale of marijuana.
Additionally, Proposition 64 imposed a sales tax on cannabis products, generating revenue for state programs, including youth education and substance abuse treatment. The law also included provisions for the automatic expungement of certain past marijuana convictions, aiming to address the social justice implications of previous cannabis prohibition.
