Caliciviridae
Caliciviridae is a family of viruses known for causing gastroenteritis, which is inflammation of the stomach and intestines. These viruses are small, non-enveloped, and have a single-stranded RNA genome. Common members of this family include Norovirus and Sapovirus, which are often responsible for outbreaks of foodborne illness.
Transmission of Caliciviridae typically occurs through contaminated food or water, as well as direct contact with infected individuals. Symptoms of infection can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. While most infections are self-limiting, they can lead to dehydration, especially in vulnerable populations like the elderly and young children.
