CSS Virginia
CSS Virginia was a Confederate Navy ship during the American Civil War. Launched in 1861, it was originally a merchant vessel named the SS Virginia before being converted into a warship. The ship was primarily used for commerce raiding against Union shipping.
The CSS Virginia is best known for its role in the historic Battle of Hampton Roads in March 1862, where it famously faced the USS Monitor, marking the first battle between ironclad warships. This battle signified a turning point in naval warfare, showcasing the effectiveness of ironclad ships over traditional wooden vessels.
