C/2007 N1
C/2007 N1 is a long-period comet discovered on July 13, 2007, by astronomer Michael J. Schwartz. It is part of the Oort Cloud, a distant region of our solar system that contains many icy bodies. This comet has an elongated orbit that takes it far from the Sun, making it visible from Earth only once every several hundred years.
The comet reached its perihelion, or closest approach to the Sun, on January 1, 2008. During this time, it became bright enough to be observed with small telescopes. C/2007 N1 is notable for its distinctive tail, which is formed by gas and dust released as it approaches the Sun.
