C&D Canal
The C&D Canal, or the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, is a man-made waterway in the United States that connects the Chesapeake Bay to the Delaware River. It spans approximately 14 miles and runs through the state of Delaware. The canal was completed in 1829 and serves as a crucial shipping route, allowing vessels to avoid the longer journey around the Delmarva Peninsula.
The canal is maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and plays an important role in regional commerce. It supports both commercial and recreational boating, providing access to various parks and natural areas along its banks. The C&D Canal is also a habitat for diverse wildlife, making it a popular spot for nature enthusiasts.
