Burke and Wills Expedition
The Burke and Wills Expedition was an Australian exploration mission that took place in 1860-1861. Led by Robert O'Hara Burke and William John Wills, the expedition aimed to cross the Australian continent from south to north, starting in Melbourne and ending at the Gulf of Carpentaria. The team faced numerous challenges, including harsh weather, difficult terrain, and limited supplies.
Despite reaching their destination, the expedition ultimately ended in tragedy. Burke and Wills, along with a small group, attempted to return south but succumbed to starvation and exhaustion. Their journey highlighted the difficulties of exploration in Australia and led to increased interest in the region's geography and resources.
