Buoyage System
The Buoyage System is a method used in maritime navigation to mark safe routes and hazards in waterways. It employs a series of floating markers, known as buoys, which are color-coded and shaped to convey specific information to mariners. These buoys help vessels determine their position and navigate safely, especially in areas with shallow waters or obstacles.
There are two main types of buoyage systems: the IALA A and IALA B systems. The IALA (International Association of Lighthouse Authorities) standards ensure consistency in buoy markings worldwide. Each system has its own color and shape conventions, aiding sailors in recognizing navigational aids regardless of their location.
