Buffalo State Hospital
Buffalo State Hospital, located in Buffalo, New York, was established in 1880 as a psychiatric facility. Designed by architect Henry Hobson Richardson, the hospital is known for its Romanesque Revival architecture and was one of the first institutions to provide humane treatment for individuals with mental illnesses.
The hospital served as a model for mental health care in the United States, emphasizing rehabilitation and community integration. Over the years, it has undergone various changes and renovations, reflecting evolving attitudes toward mental health treatment and care. Today, the site is part of the Buffalo State College campus.
