Boundary Waters Canoe Area
The Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) is a protected wilderness region located in northeastern Minnesota, near the Canadian border. It covers over 1 million acres and features thousands of lakes, rivers, and streams, making it a popular destination for canoeing, fishing, and camping. The area is part of the larger Superior National Forest and is known for its stunning natural beauty and diverse wildlife.
Established in 1978, the BWCA is designated as a federally protected area, which helps preserve its unique ecosystems. Visitors can explore its numerous trails and waterways, but permits are required for entry to help manage the impact on the environment. The BWCA is also adjacent to the Quetico Provincial Park in Canada, offering additional opportunities for outdoor recreation.
