Bombyx mori, commonly known as the silkworm, is a domesticated insect that primarily feeds on the leaves of the mulberry tree. It is best known for its role in silk production, as the larvae spin cocoons made of silk fibers. These fibers are harvested and processed to create silk fabric.
The life cycle of Bombyx mori includes four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. The larvae, or caterpillars, grow rapidly and can consume large amounts of leaves. After about 25 days, they enter the pupal stage, where they transform into adult moths, completing their life cycle.
