Blackface
Blackface is a theatrical practice where non-Black performers darken their skin to portray Black characters. This practice originated in the 19th century, particularly in minstrel shows, where it was used to perpetuate stereotypes and mock African Americans.
The use of Blackface is widely considered offensive and racist today, as it reinforces harmful stereotypes and ignores the cultural significance of Black identity. Many institutions and communities have condemned its use, recognizing the need for sensitivity and respect in representations of different cultures.
