Black Lion Tamarin
The Black Lion Tamarin is a small primate native to the Atlantic coastal forests of Brazil. It is known for its striking black fur and distinctive mane, which resembles a lion's. These tamarins typically weigh around 1.5 to 2.5 pounds and have a body length of about 10 to 12 inches, excluding their long tails. They are social animals, often found in family groups, and primarily feed on fruits, insects, and small vertebrates.
This species is classified as endangered due to habitat loss and fragmentation caused by deforestation and urban development. Conservation efforts are underway to protect their remaining habitats and promote their population recovery. The Black Lion Tamarin is also part of various breeding programs in zoos, aimed at preserving genetic diversity and raising awareness about the importance of rainforest conservation.
