Biting Midges
Biting midges, also known as no-see-ums, are tiny flying insects belonging to the family Ceratopogonidae. They are often found in warm, humid environments, particularly near water sources like lakes and marshes. These insects are most active during dawn and dusk, and their bites can cause itchy, red welts on the skin.
Despite their small size, typically measuring 1 to 3 millimeters, biting midges can be a nuisance to humans and animals. They feed on blood, using their sharp mouthparts to pierce the skin. While their bites are generally not dangerous, they can lead to allergic reactions in some individuals.
