Battle of the Philippine Sea
The Battle of the Philippine Sea was a significant naval battle fought during World War II from June 19 to June 20, 1944. It involved the forces of the United States, led by Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, against the Imperial Japanese Navy, commanded by Jisaburo Ozawa. This battle was part of the larger campaign to capture the Mariana Islands and aimed to weaken Japanese naval power.
The battle is often referred to as the "Great Marianas Turkey Shoot" due to the overwhelming success of American fighter planes against Japanese aircraft. The U.S. forces achieved a decisive victory, sinking several Japanese carriers and destroying a large number of enemy aircraft, which significantly diminished Japan's ability to conduct offensive operations in the Pacific.
