Battle of Westerplatte
The Battle of Westerplatte was one of the first battles of World War II, taking place from September 1 to September 7, 1939. It occurred at the Westerplatte peninsula in Poland, where a small garrison of Polish soldiers defended a military transit depot against a much larger German force. The battle began with a naval bombardment and an infantry assault, showcasing the bravery of the Polish defenders.
Despite being heavily outnumbered and outgunned, the Polish troops held out for seven days, demonstrating significant resistance. The battle ended with the surrender of the Polish garrison, but it became a symbol of courage and determination in the face of overwhelming odds during the early stages of the war.
