Battle of Mortain
The Battle of Mortain was a significant military engagement during World War II, occurring from August 7 to August 13, 1944. It was part of the larger Operation Overlord, aimed at liberating France from German occupation. The battle took place in the Normandy region, specifically around the town of Mortain, where Allied forces sought to repel a German counteroffensive aimed at cutting off their supply lines.
The German attack, known as Operation Lüttich, was intended to encircle the Allied troops in Normandy. Despite initial successes, the Germans faced strong resistance from American forces, particularly the 29th Infantry Division and the 4th Infantry Division. Ultimately, the Allies successfully defended their positions, leading to heavy German losses and contributing to the overall Allied advance in France.
