Battle of Fort Washington
The Battle of Fort Washington took place on November 16, 1776, during the American Revolutionary War. It was fought between the British forces, led by General William Howe, and the American defenders, commanded by Colonel Robert Magaw. The battle was part of a larger campaign to capture New York City and resulted in a decisive British victory.
The American troops were heavily outnumbered and faced significant challenges, including poor fortifications and lack of reinforcements. After intense fighting, the fort was captured, leading to the surrender of around 3,000 American soldiers. This defeat weakened the American position in the region and boosted British morale.
