Basiliscus basiliscus
The Basiliscus basiliscus, commonly known as the green basilisk, is a lizard native to Central and South America. It is easily recognized by its vibrant green color and distinctive crest along its back. This species is often referred to as the "Jesus Christ lizard" because of its ability to run on water for short distances, using its long toes and lightweight body.
Green basilisks inhabit tropical rainforests, where they are typically found near water sources. They are primarily herbivorous, feeding on leaves, fruits, and flowers, but may also consume insects. These lizards are excellent climbers and can often be seen basking on branches or rocks.
