Bascule Bridges
A bascule bridge is a type of movable bridge that uses a counterweight system to lift one or more sections of the bridge, known as leaves, to allow boats and ships to pass underneath. The design typically consists of two leaves that pivot upward, creating an opening for marine traffic.
These bridges are commonly found in urban areas where waterways intersect with roadways. They are efficient for both vehicle and vessel traffic, as they can be raised quickly and require less space than other types of movable bridges, such as drawbridges or swing bridges.
