Barotse
The Barotse are an ethnic group primarily found in the western region of Zambia, particularly in the Western Province. They are known for their rich cultural heritage, which includes traditional music, dance, and crafts. The Barotse people speak the Lozi language and have a unique social structure centered around the Lozi Kingdom, which has a long history and is led by a king known as the Litunga.
The Barotse are also recognized for their agricultural practices, particularly in the fertile floodplains of the Zambezi River. They cultivate crops such as maize, millet, and cassava, and engage in fishing and livestock rearing. The annual Kuomboka ceremony, which marks the king's migration from the floodplains to higher ground, is a significant cultural event that attracts many visitors.
