Baltic Way
The Baltic Way was a peaceful political demonstration that took place on August 23, 1989. It involved approximately two million people forming a human chain across the three Baltic states: Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. The event marked the 50th anniversary of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, which had led to the occupation of these countries by the Soviet Union.
Participants in the Baltic Way aimed to express their desire for independence and solidarity among the Baltic nations. The demonstration was significant in raising international awareness about the struggle for freedom in the region, ultimately contributing to the restoration of independence for all three countries in the early 1990s.
