Backstitch
Backstitch is a hand-sewing technique used to create strong seams and secure hems. It involves stitching backward, which means the needle goes through the fabric in a way that overlaps the previous stitch. This method is particularly useful for sewing on fabrics that require durability, such as in garment construction or quilting.
To perform a backstitch, start by making a small stitch forward, then bring the needle back to the end of that stitch and push it through the fabric again. Repeat this process, ensuring each new stitch overlaps the last. This creates a solid line of stitching that is less likely to unravel.
