Babinski hammer
The Babinski hammer is a medical instrument used by healthcare professionals to test reflexes during a neurological examination. It features a rubber head that is designed to strike the skin gently, allowing for the assessment of the Babinski reflex, which is an important indicator of neurological function.
When the Babinski hammer is used, the examiner typically strokes the sole of the foot. A normal response in adults is to curl the toes, while an abnormal response, known as the Babinski sign, involves the toes extending upward. This response can indicate potential issues with the central nervous system.
