Babesiosis
Babesiosis is a disease caused by microscopic parasites that infect red blood cells. These parasites are primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of infected ticks, particularly the Ixodes scapularis tick, also known as the black-legged or deer tick. Symptoms can include fever, chills, sweats, headache, and muscle aches, and they typically appear one to four weeks after infection.
Diagnosis is usually made through blood tests that identify the presence of the parasites. Treatment often involves specific antibiotics and antimalarial medications. While most people recover fully, severe cases can occur, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems or other health issues.
