Aztec understanding of time
The Aztecs had a unique understanding of time, viewing it as cyclical rather than linear. They believed that time was divided into different eras, each governed by specific gods and marked by significant events. This cyclical nature meant that they anticipated the return of past events and deities, which influenced their rituals and daily life.
To track time, the Aztecs used two main calendars: the Tonalpohualli, a 260-day ritual calendar, and the Xiuhpohualli, a 365-day solar calendar. These calendars were essential for agricultural planning, religious ceremonies, and social events, reflecting their deep connection to the cosmos and the natural world.
