Automatic Identification System
The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a tracking system used primarily for maritime navigation. It enables ships and vessels to automatically exchange information about their position, course, speed, and other relevant data with nearby ships and coastal authorities. This helps improve safety at sea by allowing vessels to be aware of each other's movements and avoid collisions.
AIS operates using VHF radio frequencies and is mandatory for large commercial vessels, while smaller boats can voluntarily use it. The system enhances situational awareness for mariners and supports search and rescue operations, contributing to overall maritime safety and efficiency.
