Authorization for Use of Military Force
The Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) is a law passed by the United States Congress that allows the President to use military force against those responsible for attacks on the U.S. or its allies. Initially enacted in response to the September 11, 2001 attacks, it provides the legal basis for military actions without requiring a formal declaration of war.
The AUMF has been used in various military operations, including actions against terrorist groups like Al-Qaeda and ISIS. Over the years, its scope has been debated, with some arguing it grants excessive power to the executive branch while others believe it is necessary for national security.
