Aum Shinrikyo
Aum Shinrikyo is a Japanese religious group founded in the 1980s by Shoko Asahara. The group combined elements of Buddhism, Hinduism, and apocalyptic beliefs, attracting followers with its promises of spiritual enlightenment and salvation.
In 1995, Aum Shinrikyo gained international notoriety for carrying out a deadly sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway, which resulted in 13 deaths and thousands of injuries. The incident led to a crackdown on the group, and Asahara was arrested and later executed in 2018. The organization has since been designated as a terrorist group in several countries.
