Atrial Septum
The atrial septum is a wall that separates the two upper chambers of the heart, known as the atria. It plays a crucial role in ensuring that oxygen-rich blood from the lungs does not mix with oxygen-poor blood returning from the body. This separation helps maintain efficient circulation and proper oxygenation of the blood.
In some individuals, a defect in the atrial septum, called an atrial septal defect (ASD), can occur. This condition allows blood to flow between the atria, which may lead to increased blood flow to the lungs and potential heart complications if left untreated. Regular check-ups can help monitor heart health and detect any issues early.
