Atlantic Menhaden
The Atlantic Menhaden is a small, schooling fish found along the eastern coast of North America. It plays a crucial role in the marine ecosystem, serving as a primary food source for larger fish, birds, and marine mammals. Menhaden are known for their high oil content and are often harvested for use in fish meal and oil, as well as for bait in commercial fishing.
These fish typically inhabit coastal waters and estuaries, where they feed on plankton. Atlantic Menhaden can grow up to 15 inches long and are characterized by their silver sides and dark blue-green backs. Their population is closely monitored due to their ecological and economic importance.
