Atlantes
Atlantes are mythical figures often depicted as giant statues that support a structure, typically a roof or a building. They are commonly found in classical architecture, particularly in ancient Greek and Roman designs. The term "atlante" is derived from the Titan Atlas in Greek mythology, who was said to hold up the heavens.
These sculptures are usually male figures and serve both decorative and structural purposes. Atlantes can be seen in various historical sites, including temples and public buildings, showcasing the artistry and engineering skills of their time. They are often compared to their female counterparts, known as caryatids.
