Assateague Island ponies
The Assateague Island ponies are a group of wild horses living on Assateague Island, which is located off the coast of Maryland and Virginia. These ponies are believed to be descendants of domesticated horses that were brought to the island in the 17th century. They are known for their small size, typically standing around 13 to 14 hands tall, and their unique coat colors, which can range from brown to gray.
The ponies are managed by the National Park Service and the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company. They roam freely on the island, but their population is controlled through periodic roundups. The ponies are an important part of the island's ecosystem and attract many visitors each year.
