Asian citrus psyllid
The Asian citrus psyllid is a small insect that feeds on the sap of citrus plants. It is known for transmitting the bacterium Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus, which causes a disease called citrus greening disease or huanglongbing. This disease can severely affect citrus crops, leading to reduced fruit quality and tree decline.
Originally from Southeast Asia, the Asian citrus psyllid has spread to many parts of the world, including the United States. Its presence poses a significant threat to the citrus industry, prompting efforts for monitoring and control to protect citrus trees and maintain healthy orchards.
