Arytenoid Cartilage
Arytenoid cartilage is a pair of small, pyramid-shaped structures located in the larynx, or voice box. They play a crucial role in the production of sound by supporting the vocal cords. Each arytenoid cartilage can rotate and slide, allowing for the opening and closing of the vocal folds during speech and breathing.
These cartilages are situated on the upper part of the cricoid cartilage and are connected to the vocal cords at their back ends. The movement of the arytenoid cartilages helps regulate tension and length of the vocal cords, which is essential for pitch control and voice modulation.
