Arthur Scargill
Arthur Scargill is a British trade union leader best known for his role as the president of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) from 1981 to 2002. He became a prominent figure during the UK miners' strike of 1984-1985, which was a major industrial action against the closure of coal mines. Scargill advocated for miners' rights and sought to protect jobs in the coal industry.
Born on January 11, 1938, in Barnsley, England, Scargill began his career as a coal miner before rising through the ranks of the NUM. His leadership style was often described as militant, and he was known for his strong opposition to the policies of the Thatcher government. After retiring from the NUM, Scargill continued to be involved in various political and social causes.
