Armero
Armero was a town in Colombia that was tragically destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 1985. The eruption of Nevado del Ruiz caused a massive mudslide, known as a lahar, which buried the town under several meters of debris. This disaster resulted in the loss of over 20,000 lives and is considered one of the deadliest volcanic eruptions in history.
Before the eruption, Armero was a thriving community with a population of around 28,000 people. The town was known for its agricultural activities, particularly coffee and sugarcane production. Today, the site serves as a reminder of the importance of disaster preparedness and the impact of natural hazards on communities.
