Armed Forces Revolutionary Council
The Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) was a military junta that governed Sierra Leone from 1997 to 1998. It came to power after a coup that overthrew the elected government of President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah. The AFRC aimed to restore order amid civil unrest but faced significant opposition and international condemnation.
In early 1998, the AFRC was ousted by a military intervention led by Nigeria as part of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) peacekeeping efforts. Following its removal, the AFRC leaders faced trials for human rights violations during their rule, contributing to the ongoing discourse on accountability in post-conflict societies.
