Aral Sea
The Aral Sea was once one of the largest lakes in the world, located between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. It was known for its rich biodiversity and fishing industry, supporting local economies and communities. However, in the 1960s, large-scale irrigation projects diverted rivers that fed the sea, leading to significant shrinkage.
As a result of this diversion, the Aral Sea has dramatically decreased in size, causing ecological and economic crises. The once-thriving fishing industry collapsed, and the region faced severe environmental issues, including increased salinity and desertification. Efforts to restore parts of the sea are ongoing, but challenges remain.
