April 19, 1993
On April 19, 1993, a significant event in U.S. history occurred when the 51-day standoff between federal law enforcement and the religious group known as the Branch Davidians ended in tragedy. The standoff took place at the group's compound in Waco, Texas, and was marked by a tense confrontation over allegations of illegal weapons possession and child abuse.
On that day, the FBI launched an assault on the compound, which resulted in a fire that consumed the building. The blaze led to the deaths of 76 individuals, including their leader, David Koresh, and many children, raising questions about government actions and the handling of the situation.
