Angel Island Immigration Station
The Angel Island Immigration Station was a facility located on Angel Island in San Francisco Bay, operational from 1910 to 1940. It served as the primary immigration processing center for Asian immigrants, particularly those arriving from China, Japan, and other countries. The station was designed to enforce the Chinese Exclusion Act and other restrictive immigration laws, leading to long detentions for many immigrants.
During its operation, thousands of immigrants were held at the station, often for weeks or months, while their cases were reviewed. The facility included barracks, a hospital, and administrative offices. Today, the site is a historic landmark and part of the Angel Island State Park, where visitors can learn about its significant role in American immigration history.
