American Bison
The American Bison, often referred to as the buffalo, is a large mammal native to North America. It is characterized by its massive head, humped shoulders, and thick fur, which helps it survive in cold climates. Bison can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and are herbivores, primarily grazing on grasses and other vegetation.
Historically, American Bison roamed the plains in vast herds, playing a crucial role in the ecosystem. They are now primarily found in protected areas, such as national parks and reserves, due to significant population declines in the 19th century caused by overhunting and habitat loss. Conservation efforts have helped their numbers recover.
