Alvar Saints
Alvar Saints are a group of revered figures in the Alvar tradition, which is a devotional movement within Vaishnavism in India. They are known for their passionate poetry and songs that express deep love and devotion to Lord Vishnu and his avatars, particularly Krishna. The Alvar Saints played a significant role in promoting the worship of Vishnu and contributed to the Bhakti movement, emphasizing personal devotion over ritualistic practices.
The Alvar Saints lived between the 6th and 9th centuries CE in the region of Tamil Nadu. There are twelve primary Alvars, each with unique contributions to Tamil literature and spirituality. Their hymns, known as Tiruvaymoli, are considered sacred texts and are still sung in temples today, reflecting their lasting influence on Hinduism and Tamil culture.
