Alpine marmot
The Alpine marmot is a large rodent found in the mountainous regions of the Alps, Pyrenees, and Carpathians. They typically inhabit rocky areas and meadows at elevations between 1,800 and 3,200 meters. These social animals live in colonies and are known for their burrowing behavior, creating extensive tunnel systems for shelter and protection.
Alpine marmots are herbivorous, primarily feeding on grasses, herbs, and flowers. They are well-adapted to their cold environments, with thick fur and a layer of fat for insulation. During winter, they hibernate in their burrows, emerging in spring to forage and socialize with their colony members.
