Alpha-2 Agonists
Alpha-2 agonists are a class of medications that primarily stimulate alpha-2 adrenergic receptors in the brain. This stimulation leads to a decrease in the release of norepinephrine, resulting in reduced sympathetic nervous system activity. As a result, these drugs can lower blood pressure, decrease heart rate, and provide sedation.
Commonly used alpha-2 agonists include clonidine and dexmedetomidine. They are often prescribed for conditions such as hypertension, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and anxiety. Additionally, they may be used in anesthesia to provide sedation and analgesia during medical procedures.
