Alpha-2 Adrenergic Agonists
Alpha-2 adrenergic agonists are a class of medications that stimulate alpha-2 adrenergic receptors in the brain. These receptors play a key role in regulating neurotransmitter release, leading to decreased sympathetic nervous system activity. As a result, these drugs can lower blood pressure, reduce heart rate, and provide sedation.
Commonly used alpha-2 adrenergic agonists include clonidine and dexmedetomidine. They are often prescribed for conditions such as hypertension, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and anxiety. These medications can also be used in anesthesia to enhance sedation and analgesia during surgical procedures.
