Alopias is a genus of sharks commonly known as thresher sharks. They are characterized by their long, slender bodies and especially their elongated tails, which can be up to half their total length. Thresher sharks are found in warm and temperate ocean waters around the world and are known for their unique hunting technique, where they use their tails to stun prey.
There are three recognized species of thresher sharks: the bigeye thresher (Alopias superciliosus), the common thresher (Alopias vulpinus), and the pelagic thresher (Alopias pelagicus). These sharks are generally solitary but can sometimes be seen in small groups. They are considered vulnerable due to overfishing and habitat loss.
