Alcestis
Alcestis is a tragedy by the ancient Greek playwright Euripides, first performed in 438 BCE. The play tells the story of Alcestis, the devoted wife of Admetus, who sacrifices her life to save her husband from death. In return for her selfless act, Admetus is granted the opportunity to live, but he is left heartbroken by the loss of his beloved wife.
The play explores themes of love, sacrifice, and the nature of mortality. Heracles, a friend of Admetus, later arrives and learns of Alcestis' sacrifice. He then embarks on a quest to bring her back from the underworld, showcasing the bonds of friendship and heroism.
