Aksum Obelisks
The Aksum Obelisks are ancient stone monuments located in Aksum, Ethiopia. These towering structures, carved from granite, were erected around the 4th century AD to mark the graves of important rulers and signify their power. The largest obelisk stands at about 24 meters tall and weighs over 500 tons.
The obelisks are intricately decorated with false doors and windows, symbolizing the connection between the living and the dead. They are part of the Aksumite Empire, which was a significant civilization in ancient Africa, known for its wealth and trade networks. Today, the obelisks are a UNESCO World Heritage site.
