Adverse Possession
Adverse Possession is a legal doctrine that allows a person to claim ownership of land under certain conditions. To successfully acquire property through adverse possession, the claimant must possess the land openly, continuously, and without the permission of the original owner for a specific period, which varies by jurisdiction.
This process is intended to encourage the productive use of land and resolve disputes over property. If the original owner does not take action to reclaim their property within the required timeframe, the claimant may gain legal title, effectively transferring ownership from the original owner to the possessor.
