Abe Fortas
Abe Fortas was an American lawyer and jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1965 to 1969. Appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson, Fortas was known for his liberal views and strong advocacy for civil rights. He played a significant role in landmark cases, including Gideon v. Wainwright, which ensured the right to legal counsel for defendants who could not afford an attorney.
Before his appointment to the Supreme Court, Fortas had a distinguished career as a legal advisor and partner at a prominent law firm. He also served as a law professor and was involved in various public service roles. His tenure on the Court ended amid controversy, leading to his resignation in 1969.
